This piece is called "First Cup" and is the latest in my new Stories Series. This 10 x 10 canvas had a lot of texture on it - molding paste and drizzled tar gel. Sometimes I pull out older pieces that need some reworking or maybe a complete re-do as was the case here. Because it had so much texture I added some torn rice paper shapes to create some unified areas. As I turned the canvas one of the shapes kept standing out as a person and I started to paint over the previous painting to tell a story about this person looking out over the mountains. The birds are also greeting the dawn.
Nothing remains from the previous painting but the underlying textures which have created and contributed to the mood of this piece. It's always fun to see how the transformation ends up!
