I recently took part in a 12 week on-line workshop with California artist Nicholas Wilton. It was fantastic! He is an invaluable source of information and I feel my artwork will be going in new and better directions.
During the 12 weeks, I completed (6) 12 x 12 pieces on board and I wanted to show you some of the process that I go through in making a painting. Nicholas encouraged us to not fall in love with something too soon, but to continue to push ourselves. Below is one of the panels that went through 5 different stages until it felt complete. (actually it went through more stages but these are the only ones I have pictures of!)
I started out with the figure but on my next pass on this board I rotated it and ended up covering up most of it up. Now it was looking like a landscape of sorts for the next 2 boards. On the fourth board, I turned the board to the left and began to "see" flower shapes, painting the negative spaces around them and adding a vase. The finished piece, "Floral Motion", was a result of many layers of history, giving it a unique look that couldn't have happened any other way.
